SDxCentral Quick HitsHouse Mirrors Senate, Passes CHIPS and Science Act: The CHIPS and Science Act passed through the House on Thursday with a 243-187 vote — a tally that indicates the legislation’s strong bipartisan support.
The bill “will create high-paying manufacturing jobs across the country and strengthen U.S. leadership in the industries of the future at the same time,” President Joe Biden said in a White House statement. “The CHIPS and Science Act is exactly what we need to be doing to grow our economy right now.”
Currently, the U.S. manufactures 12% of the world’s chips. This number has shrunk significantly since the 90s, when the U.S. produced 37% of the world’s chips.
The bill will target bringing back the domestic manufacturing of semiconductors and hopes to strengthen national security, according to the release. The bill will make the U.S. less dependent on foreign sources of semiconductors.
Prior to the bill passing the Senate on Wednesday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said she expected bipartisan support in the House and would be sending the bill to President Biden’s desk as soon as possible.
Biden, who is a long proponent of the bill, stated his approval Thursday by saying he “look[s] forward to signing this bill into law and continuing to grow our economy from the bottom up and middle out for working families all across the country.”
Intel reports Q2 financial results: Intel brought in $15.3 billion in revenue this quarter, compared to $19.6 billion from the previous year — a 22% revenue decline.
“This quarter’s results were below the standards we have set for the company and our shareholders. We must and will do better. The sudden and rapid decline in economic activity was the largest driver, but the shortfall also reflects our own execution issues,” Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger said during the earnings call with investors.
