SDxCentral Quick HitsFCC Kicks off 5G Mid-Band Spectrum Auction — The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced Friday morning that they will open bidding in its most recent mid-band spectrum auction.
Auction 108 offers 8,017 new county-based overlay licenses in the 2.5 GHz band — mostly in rural parts of the country with unassigned 2.5 GHz — to support next generation wireless services, including 5G, according to a FCC news release.
The “clock-1” auction format offers only a single frequency-specific license in a category, in a county. This is similar to the clock phase of past FCC auctions, according to the FCC.
The announcement follows the “disposition of applications filed in the Rural Tribal Priority Window, which has to date resulted in the grant of 335 licenses to serve Tribal communities,” said the FCC in a news release, in efforts to bridge spectrum gaps.
“We all know there are gaps in 5G coverage, especially in rural America, and this auction is a unique opportunity to fill them in,” said FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel.
