SD-WAN provider Cybera this week added a cloud management system on top of its SD-WAN platform for greater network insights.

Cybera has been around since 2001. Its primary offering is a multi-tenant platform, CyberaOne, which is built on an architecture that provides SD-WAN, cloud-based security, and secure application gateway services to customers. Specifically these services include cloud-based firewalls and intrusion detection and prevention systems (IDP), threat management, log management, remote access service, and secure cloud-to-cloud interconnects.

According to Cliff Duffey, the founder and president of Cybera, this architecture is what sets it apart from other SD-WAN providers.

“Rather than build one SD-WAN network with application policies applied to a single routing domain, our design is to build multiple SD-WAN segments on a per application basis, each of these with its own unique routing domain,” he said. “By doing this, each individual SD-WAN segment can be dedicated to a certain application and have custom tailored policies that do not conflict with other network segments.”

This architecture is also what allows the vendor to serve a specific segment, says Duffey: distributed enterprises with anywhere from hundreds to 10s of thousands of locations that have little to no IT staff.

And for these enterprises, management is of the utmost importance, so Cybera added this new cloud management system. Deemed CyberVue, this service allows multiple users to manage features through a single SD-WAN and cloud service platform. And it enables greater security enforcement and flexibility.

“For example, a parent brand can configure the specific network and security policies on their SD-WAN segments and services while their franchisees can only see and manage the services, which they purchased separately,” Duffey explained. Partners can then spin up SD-WAN segments and services for a customer’s platform without interfering with the segments.

A typical customer, he says, has between four and 10 separate SD-WAN network segments with each segment operating as an independent virtual network.

There are three components to CyberVue: real-time health and network status visibility; a configuration controller that provides controlled environment, making it easier to make routine changes; and a toolset for monitoring and identifying the root cause of local issues.

Cybera’s main platform, of which CyberVue will be a component, also has some monitoring capabilities. It can monitor each network segment endpoint to identify when application connectivity is lost. The platform also collects log data from, and applies simple network management protocol (SNMP) to all of the systems on a customer’s network — including customer premises applications and cloud systems.

In a prepared statement, Cybera CEO Andrew Lev said that the company added the new management system “to provide customers and partners with flexibility to take advantage of unique and rapidly changing opportunities available at the network edge. To that end, CyberaVUE delivers greater insight and control to safely access and make network changes without disrupting operations or security policies.”
