The release of CrowdStrike's 2025 Global Threat Report highlights alarming trends in cyber threats, showing a 150% increase in state-sponsored cyber operations linked to China. The report also details a 442% rise in voice phishing, or vishing, attributed to advancements in AI technology.

In 2024, adversaries operating on behalf of the Chinese government significantly escalated cyber espionage efforts, particularly against critical sectors like financial services and manufacturing, with targeted attacks reportedly surging by as much as 300%. These findings indicate a troubling evolution in the tactics employed by cybercriminals.

The report reveals that adversaries are increasingly using AI-generated deception techniques in their attacks. The shift toward malware-free intrusions that exploit trusted access poses significant challenges for security teams, making real-time detection critical to preventing breaches.

“China’s increasingly aggressive cyber espionage, combined with the rapid weaponization of AI-powered deception, is forcing organizations to rethink their approach to security,” said Adam Meyers, head of counter adversary operations at CrowdStrike. “Adversaries exploit identity gaps, leverage social engineering and move across domains undetected—rendering legacy defenses ineffective.”

Key findings of the report also pointed to steep increases in incidents involving insider threats, particularly by the DPRK, with 40% of attacks utilizing such methods. As attackers adapt to emerging technologies, businesses are urged to enhance their security postures and address vulnerabilities effectively.

This report underscores the need for a proactive approach to cybersecurity, focusing on comprehensive threat intelligence and improved detection capabilities to counter escalating threats in the cyber landscape.
