Tech unemployment has dropped to 2%, the lowest since November 2023, according to the latest report from CompTIA. The overall tech workforce in the United States now totals nearly 6.5 million, following a net increase of 7,000 new positions.
Despite the overall job growth, the technology sector itself saw a decline of 6,117 jobs, largely attributed to losses in PC, semiconductor, and components manufacturing. This represents a 1% decrease for the tech sector, which employs approximately 5.6 million workers.
Tim Herbert, chief research officer at CompTIA, commented on the significance of this report, marking its 100th release in tracking tech workforce trends. “What an incredible journey in tracking tech workforce trends over the past decade,” he said. “A true honor to be at the center of such an innovative and dynamic space.”
In December, there were 434,415 active job postings for tech roles, with 165,189 of those new additions within the month. Key areas of demand included software development, IT project management, cybersecurity, and tech support.
Leading companies in terms of job postings included Amazon, Accenture, Deloitte, and PricewaterhouseCoopers, among others. Notably, 45% of December tech job postings did not require a four-year degree, particularly for roles in network support, tech support, and programming.
