Cohesity today said it acquired Imanis Data, which provides data management and backup for Hadoop and NoSQL workloads and databases, for an undisclosed amount. These capabilities, along with new backup and recovery for Microsoft OneDrive, are available now on Cohesity’s platform. And it plans to add Kubernetes containerized application support by mid-year, said Raj Dutt, director of product marketing at the company.

“The goal is to address the problem of mass data fragmentation,” he said, adding that the acquisition and the new product features both help Cohesity customers achieve this.

Cohesity’s platform consolidates secondary data storage silos onto a hyperconverged, scale-out platform that spans private and public clouds. It already already supports hypervisors from VMware, Nutanix, and Microsoft, along with traditional enterprise databases and applications such as Oracle, SQL, SAP HANA, and Microsoft Office 365. Now it’s adding modern workloads including software-as-a-service (SaaS) environments like OneDrive, Hadoop and NoSQL databases, and containers, he said.

It’s worth nothing that in February 2018 Cohesity’s primary competitor Rubrik reached a deal to acquire Datos IO, which played in the same space as Imanis Data, and its technology that supports cloud native applications, NoSQL databases, and big data file systems. And a couple months later that vendor announced its platform for cloud-delivered data management applications.

The Imanis Data acquisition makes Cohesity “one of the early entrants in protecting NoSQL and Hadoop workloads,” said Phil Goodwin, research director of cloud data management for protection at IDC. “We estimate that 50 percent of organizations have some kind of NoSQL, or data lake Hadoop-type of deployment, and we also believe that the majority of those applications are inadequately protected. The acquisition of Imanis is significant to Cohesity because it puts them in a position to directly address those workloads.”

Cohesity’s First Acquisition

Imanis Data is Cohesity’s first acquisition. The data management unicorn — Cohesity calls its technology “hyperconverged secondary storage” — first partnered with Imanis Data earlier this year when it launched MarketPlace, which allows customers to download Cohesity and third-party applications.

At the same time, a growing number of Cohesity customers, especially its Fortune 500 companies, were looking for an easier way to back up and instantly recover Hadoop and NoSQL databases used to build their newer applications. And many of them were already using Imanis Data to manage their big data workloads.

The acquisition enables customers to manage and backup all of their Hadoop and NoSQL distributed databases — including MongoDB, Cassandra, Cloudera, CouchbaseDB, and Hbase — in addition to their traditional databases and virtual, cloud, and physical workloads on one platform.

“We have a vision that we need to provide the most comprehensive platform for our customers so they can have a single, webscale platform to handle anything that has to do with data management, data protection, test-dev, etc., and we’ve been going along that path from our earlier days,” said Michael Porat, VP of strategy and business development at Cohesity. “We have a Cohesity strategy and in this case an acquisition just fit perfectly.”
