Backup-as-a-service provider Clumio extended its Protect data protection product to Amazon Web Services' (AWS) Simple Storage Service (S3), soothing what it claims are major security, visibility, and compliance pain points for current AWS S3 customers.
Clumio VP of Product Chadd Kenney explained that while AWS S3 has been revamped to host more business-critical datasets for cloud-native applications and data lakes for modern analytics, it has only a few protection options available.
“Durability does not protect against ransomware or bad actors, even though it's 11-9's of durability that saves zero files from deletion,” Kenney said in an interview with SDxCentral. “The two options that AWS gives you, which is replication and versioning, is incredibly expensive to deploy and highly inefficient.”
Because of that, Clumio rolled out its S3 backup service inside AWS. Kenney explained that it protects against ransomware and bad actors with multi-factor authentication (MFA), access controls for assets and roles, and no delete button that prevents hackers from getting access or deleting customers’ data.
The Clumio Protect for Amazon S3 stores air-gapped backups in immutable storage with end-to-end data encryption and allows customers to bring their own encryption keys. It also provides a centralized view across all accounts with real-time visibility and out-of-compliance alerts. It can also reduce recovery time with flexible recovery options for buckets, prefixes, and objects across any AWS account, he added.
“The biggest differentiator is that we are an as-a-service solution that has all of this built-in efficiencies already so you don't have to build it yourself,” Kenney said.
Clumio plans to open up early access by the end of October, and official launch by early December.
Public Cloud FocusClumio, which has scored around $186 million in funding since its founding in 2017, has focused heavily on public cloud services. The vendor this year has seen a 50% increase in engineering efficiency, 400% annual recurring revenue growth in AWS native service revenue, and three-times customer growth with AWS data protection, according to Kenney.
The Protect platform is one of its core products, and already includes support for AWS Elastic Block Storage (EBS), AWS Relational Database Service (RDS), AWS Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), VMware Cloud running in AWS, and Microsoft 365. Its other product is Clumio Discover, which is a cloud optimization engine.
