SAN FRANCISCO — Cisco rolled out a new security platform, SecureX, that integrates its network, endpoint, cloud, and application security products, as well as threat intelligence from Cisco Talos, in a cloud-native platform.

The platform provides visibility and automates workflows across all of these parts of customers’ security infrastructure, and it works with both Cisco and third-party products, said Gee Rittenhouse, SVP and GM of Cisco’s Security Business Group. It can analyze data across more than 150 million endpoints, network traffic from switches and routers, and includes encrypted traffic, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google public clouds, and private data center environments. Plus, it uses browser plugins and open APIs so customers or partners can connect other data sources and security products with SecureX.

SecureX targets complex security environments made worse by a plethora of products that don’t necessarily interoperate. Cisco’s 2020 CISO Benchmark Study, also released today, surveyed 2,800 security professionals and found that 28% feel that managing a multi-vendor environment is very challenging — an increase of eight points from last year’s survey.

‘Democratizing Security’

“Complexity itself is a vulnerability, from a security perspective, and we have been on this journey of trying to simplify the portfolio,” Rittenhouse said. “We strongly believe that, in order to really have a robust security profile, everybody has to be part of that security equation."

The term Cisco uses is “democratizing security,” Rittenhouse said. Not coincidentally, this is also the topic of a keynote address by Wendy Nather, head of advisory CISOs at Duo Security, which Cisco owns.

“It’s not just in the hands of a few security specialists that are trying to save the world,” Rittenhouse said. “Everybody has to participate.”

This also plays into one of RSA Conference 2020’s overarching themes for this year’s event: the human element.

“We have to make security really, really simple,” Rittenhouse said. “Of course, if you have really complex technology it’s prohibitive to that vision. So we’re trying to make security simple, invisible, powerful, and automated.”

SecureX will be generally available in June. At that time it will include all Cisco Security products and Cisco Talos threat hunting. After June, in a near future release, the vendor plans to add other network, orchestration, and analytics products. And further down the road, Cisco plans to roll in Meraki security, SD-WAN security, and Cyber Vision IoT security as well.
