Cisco today said it will acquire Kenna Security and combine the security software vendor’s risk-based vulnerability management technology with its SecureX platform.

The companies did not disclose financial terms of the deal, which they expect to close in Cisco’s fourth quarter of fiscal 2021.

Kenna Security’s platform uses machine learning and data science to track and predict real-world exploitations, measure organizations’ risk, and prioritize remediation efforts. Its platform protects more than 14 million assets and manages more than 12.7 billion vulnerabilities for customers including Royal Bank of Canada, HSBC, Quest Diagnostics, Mattel and Deloitte. And its technology integrates with all major industry vulnerability assessment platforms.

The 11-year-old company has raised $98.3 million with its most recent funding round, a Series D in September 2019, bringing in $48 million.

SecureX is Cisco’s cloud-native security platform. It integrates Cisco’s network, endpoint, cloud and application security products, as well as threat intelligence from Cisco Talos. The platform also connects to third-party security tools for investigations, and it provides extended detection and response (XDR) capabilities.

Cisco debuted the product at last year’s RSA security conference, and then made the platform available last June. It now has 7,000 customers, Cisco claims.

Integrating Kenna’s technology with SecureX will allow customers to create scorecards for security controls and threat response performance

“With Kenna Security as part of SecureX, we will bridge our leading threat management capabilities with its risk-based vulnerability management to dramatically enhance our platform approach for customers,” wrote Gee Rittenhouse, SVP and GM of Cisco’s Security Business Group, in a blog post. “Additionally, the combination of Kenna Security and SecureX will allow customers to address critical challenges by generating prioritized lists of vulnerabilities; streamlining collaboration between security and IT teams; and automating remediation to improve their overall security posture."

The timing of the Kenna Security acquisition is notable because the RSA Conference, arguably the biggest cybersecurity event of the year, starts on Monday, May 17, and Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins will deliver a day 1 keynote — Robbins’ first keynote at the long-running conference.

Kenna Security also marks Cisco’s third acquisition announced this week. The networking giant also bought Sedona Systems to add automation to its routed optical networking platform, and event technology platform Socio Labs.
