Ciena recorded a series of client wins for its WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e) coherent optics in deployments across Australia and New Zealand.
Australian carrier giant Telstra tapped Ciena's optics to support high-capacity services between Melbourne and Sydney. The vendor’s WL6es were paired with its 6500 Reconfigurable Line System (RLS) C+L optical line system to double fiber capacity on a single pair.
The effort enabled four 400-gigabit Ethernet (GbE) services to be transmitted over a single wavelength without regeneration and extended the distance of its previous 1.6 Tb/s efforts by 50% to about 683 miles (~1,100 km).
Matt Vesperman, Ciena’s VP for Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands, explained the addition of its coherent optical technology to Telstra's Aura Network – which provides low-latency connections across one of Australia’s busiest intercity network corridors – realizes “unprecedented performance at distances previously thought unattainable.”
"This achievement raises the bar for what’s possible in terrestrial optical networking,” Vesperman added.
Telstra’s relationship with Ciena also extends to software, with its International CEO Roary Stasko previously outlining in an SDxCentral interview how it uses the Blue Planet intelligent automation platform to handle multivendor and multidomain networks
Ciena’s optics are also set to power connections just across the Tasman Sea in New Zealand. Spark Wholesale is using Ciena's data transmission and coherent products for a dedicated data center interconnect service.
Spark’s DCI service spans 10, 100, and 400 gigabit services for metro, regional, and longer-distance networks, with Ciena’s WL6e running on its Waveserver transport platforms to ensure per-wavelength performance. The Kiwi vendor also plans to launch an 800 Gb/s (800G) offering “in the near future.”
“New Zealand's digital future is full of opportunity," Spark's Raj Singh explained. "Together, Ciena and Spark Wholesale are creating the high-performance foundations that will help organizations harness AI, accelerate innovation and confidently scale for what's next."
