CenturyLink signed a deal with security startup King & Union to become the first reseller for King & Union’s security analysis collaboration platform.

The Avalon platform allows users to collaborate on security threats and intelligence without sharing sensitive and classified information. This allows security teams to interact with members of their own organization, or with other commercial and government security analysts.

It also provides near-real time access to King & Union’s data stores, built on “years of threat data and exclusive relations with threat providers with visibility into 90 percent of the visible Internet,” said John Cassidy, president and COO at King & Union. “You put in a malware sample or IP address, and our system will start building you out an entire map of an infrastructure that could be of potential interest.”

The platform’s analytics also provide insights and sets up automated remediation actions.

In other words, it’s kind of like Slack for security teams, but with a built-in data store and graphing, threat visualization, and automation capabilities.

“Imagine a 12-hour manual exercise by an analyst being done in four seconds through our platform,” Cassidy said.

Cassidy met company co-founder Brent Wrisley while they were working to build and deploy security information sharing platforms used by U.S. government departments and agencies. They saw a need for better threat information sharing in both the public and private sector.

“We got sick and tired of everybody working by themselves in these silos,” Cassidy said. “Analysts that are doing security research are sending spreadsheets to people. Major banks are having phone calls every day to talk about threats. People are using Slack. We said, ‘There’s got to be a better way to do this.’”

They spent the last year and a half building Avalon. “This is our first coming out to the market,” Cassidy said. “We’re finally creeping out.”

CenturyLink provides managed security services to government agencies and commercial customers. King & Union’s security platform and service “complements CenturyLink’s managed security services offerings, including CenturyLink’s Enhanced Cybersecurity Services offering authorized by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security,” said Erich Sanchack, CenturyLink senior vice president and general manager for federal solutions, in a statement.
