Big Switch Networks says its networking products are “ideally suited” for cloud providers’ on-premises plays such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) Outposts.

The SDN company also today announced new hybrid cloud products and features to its Cloud First Networking portfolio.

AWS Outposts, which will be available later this year, moves AWS’ configurable compute and storage hardware into customers’ on-premises data centers. When this happens, Big Switch’s Cloud-First Networking portfolio will be “highly synergistic” with Outposts, which is essentially a data center acting as a hybrid cloud, said Prashant Gandhi, VP and chief product officer at Big Switch.

“Because we are a software networking provider, we don’t have the baggage of hardware, and we won’t have the challenges [hardware providers] might go through because of Outposts,” he said. “Our assumption is Outposts will be a like a mini version of AWS public cloud, located on prem in the data center like a private region. So solutions like our VPC management solution would be also available on Outposts.”

Big Switch doesn’t have a formal partnership with AWS around Outposts. “We haven’t seen an ecosystem yet,” Gandhi said. “But as that opens up, we want to be ready for that day one.”

This AWS Outposts’ strategy and all of the product updates announced today center around Big Switch’s hybrid cloud strategy and its Cloud First Networking portfolio. It rolled out both of these last year, and they aim to aim to bring the best of public cloud (elasticity, speed, and cost savings) to customers’ data centers and then also extend these same networking and monitoring tools across hybrid cloud environments.

Big Switch Hybrid Cloud Updates

To this end, Big Switch today made Big Cloud Fabric (BCF) for AWS Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) management generally available. It also introduced Global VPCs (G-VPCs) and a cloud-based service of its Multicloud Director (MCD). It’s a lot of acronyms. Here’s what it all means.

BCF is the vendor’s data center switching fabric. It comes in two form factors: enterprise cloud and public cloud. Enterprise cloud is an SDN-based physical switching fabric, and public cloud is virtual. This one supports deployments in AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform, and it also enables management across VPCs. With BCF for AWS VPC management, IT teams can improve visibility and control of AWS VPCs. This includes discovery, visualization, and troubleshooting VPCs across multiple user accounts. The service is available via Amazon Marketplace, as both a free and premium version.

“Our strategy is to make it available for other clouds,” Gandhi said.

With its second product announcement, G-VPCs, Big Switch extends its Enterprise-VPC (E-VPC) technology across hybrid clouds.

Big Switch announced its E-VPC product last year to help enterprises set up VPCs in their on-premises data centers, modeling the VPCs they use in the big public clouds. However, E-VPC didn’t work across hybrid clouds.

“We have VPCs on prem and in public cloud done by another controller, but they are isolated environments,” Gandhi said. “In a hybrid cloud you need a more connected, or unified environment.”

Global VCP

To address this, Big Switch is introducing a new technology, a G-VPC, to enable multi-tenant networking-as-a-service across hybrid cloud. It’s inspired by Google Cloud’s globally relevant VPC, and it extends across all deployments: data centers, edge clouds, and multiple public clouds. G-VPCs abstract the underlying infrastructure and provide a single API interface to globally deploy and manage hybrid cloud services.

Third, Big Switch announced a new cloud-based version of its Multicloud Director called MCD-Cloud Service (MCD-CS). This allows IT teams to operate all of their Big Cloud Fabric deployments from MCD’s multi-tenant cloud dashboard.

And finally, Big Switch is using Terraform, an open-cloud automation tool, to automatically deploy VPCs and G-VPCs across hybrid cloud.
