Amazon handily beat expectations and posted $87.4 billion in revenue in the fourth quarter of 2019. This included $9.95 billion in Amazon Web Services (AWS) sales, which grew 34% compared to last year. Analysts had expected about 30% growth from AWS during the quarter.

Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky attributed the strong AWS sales to its new products and features, geographic reach, and having better penetration into the enterprise market compared to other cloud providers.

“We feel that our product set leads the market,” Olsavsky said, according to a Seeking Alpha transcript. “And we add to it at a quicker pace than our competition, so actually the gap on capacity and features is growing as we speak. … And we continue to expand. We’re now in 69 availability zones across 22 geographic regions. So, I think it’s the combination of increased sales support more and better products that hit customers’ needs and also the geographic expansion’s what you’re seeing.”

While AWS continued to see slightly declining growth for the fourth consecutive quarter, Amazon still dominates the public cloud market with about 33% market share, according to Synergy Research Group. This is still about twice as much as No. 2 cloud provider Microsoft, which also reported its quarterly earnings this week. While Microsoft doesn’t disclose Azure-specific revenue, the company said its public cloud revenues grew 62% in the quarter.

Can Google Catch Up?

“That ‘thump, thump’ you just heard was the sound of Amazon and Microsoft hitting the ball out of the park with their quarterly cloud numbers. Combined AWS/Azure Q4 revenues grew by almost $2 billion from Q3,” tweeted John Dinsdale, chief analyst and research director at Synergy Research Group.

Google Cloud’s parent company Alphabet will report its quarterly earnings on Monday. According to Synergy’s previous-quarter rankings, Google’s got about 10% of the public cloud market. Its leadership reportedly set a 2023 internal deadline to become a top-two player in the market, and under new cloud chief Thomas Kurian has made several moves to boost its position.
