Amazon Web Services (AWS) has introduced a planning tool to streamline global cloud deployment planning.

AWS Capabilities by Region allows users to compare cloud services on a region-by-region basis, offering various features and APIs, as well as resources from Amazon’s infrastructure as code (IaC) service, AWS CloudFormation.

An interactive interface offers comparison of multiple AWS regions, alongside project roadmaps, potentially helping AWS customers with global scaling, data compliance, and disaster resilience through their cloud deployments.

This is achieved through a simple dropdown menu experience, with users able to sift through various locales and status availability. An AWS blog demonstrated various use cases, such as sourcing Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) storage resources around the world, and comparing Amazon DynamoDB API features across various cloud instances.

The Capabilities by Region offering also stretches to Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), featuring specialized virtual server instances such as Graviton-powered, GPU-enabled, and memory-optimized variants.

AI also gets a look in through the use of a model context protocol (MCP) server, which automates region expansion planning with AI-driven recommendations for selecting AWS regions and services.

The server also embeds regional capability validations directly into development workflows and CI/CD pipelines.

AWS’s new tool follows the recent release of CloudWatch, an automated outage tool from the cloud giant.

The application monitoring tool, which generates incident reports for AWS customers, was released shortly after the hyperscaler suffered a major outage that saw 16 million user outage reports from across more than 60 countries.
