AMD has expanded its processor portfolio with the introduction of the 5th Gen EPYC Embedded 9005 Series, utilizing the “Zen 5” architecture.

The processors are tailored for embedded markets, providing high performance and energy efficiency alongside features that support product longevity and system resiliency. They are suitable for networking, storage, and industrial edge applications.

Salil Raje, senior vice president at AMD, noted that the demand for higher compute performance is driven by AI-driven network traffic and expanding data storage needs. The new processors bring enhanced performance and efficiency, crucial for operations in always-on environments.

With core counts ranging from 8 to 192 and industry-leading core density, the EPYC Embedded 9005 processors significantly boost data processing throughput for networking and storage tasks, making them effective for firewall platforms and industrial control applications.

The “Zen 5c” core architecture improves efficiency and throughput, supporting up to 6TB of DDR5 memory and expanded I/O connectivity for high-speed data transfers.

Key features of the new series include extended product longevity with 7-year support for manufacturers, enhanced system resiliency with Non-Transparent Bridging technology, and advanced security measures to protect data integrity.

AMD collaborates with Cisco and IBM to deploy these processors in upcoming platforms. Cisco’s Director of Product Management, Lukasz Bromirski, commented on the choice of the EPYC Embedded 9005 Series for high-performance firewall products due to its high scalability.

Production shipments of the AMD EPYC Embedded 9005 Series processors are anticipated to start in the second quarter of 2025, available in the SP5 socket form factor to facilitate upgrades.
