Content delivery network (CDN) provider Akamai Technologies acquired infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) provider Linode this week in a deal valued at $900 million.

According to Akamai, Linode will accelerate the vendor's "edge-to-cloud" strategy, which already offers a range of serverless and edge-compute functionality. Founded in 2003, Linode is a relatively small IaaS provider that offers a range of low-cost, predominantly Linux-based cloud services, including virtual machines, Kubernetes, and block storage.

The acquisition positions the combined company as the "world's most distributed-compute platform from edge to cloud," Akamai claims.

While best known for its CDN services, Akamai has branched out in recent years, launching a series of security and compute services in direct competition to rival Cloudflare. Akamai's portfolio includes application and API security, secure access service edge (SASE), distributed denial-of-service attack mitigation, serverless and edge-compute functionality.

Linode operates data centers in 11 markets spread across North America, Europe, and Asia. The company claims more than a million customers globally, however the vast majority of Linode's presence is centered in the U.S.

“The opportunity to combine Linode’s developer-friendly, cloud computing capabilities with Akamai’s market-leading edge platform and security services is transformational for Akamai,” Akamai CEO Tom Leighton said in a statement.

The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2022 and will see Akamai acquire all outstanding equity in Linode. Akamai expects Linode to contribute about $100 million in additional revenues for full-fiscal-year 2022.
