Adtran today announced a partnership with United Kingdom-based broadband provider toob to deliver full-fiber internet service to more than 100,000 premises by the end of 2021.

The partnership comes a little over a year after the British government unveiled a plan to put high-speed fiber in the hands of every resident and business by 2033.

According to toob CEO Nick Parbutt, only 8% of premises in the UK have fiber access. "The UK's digital infrastructure is uncompetitive," he said in a statement.

Flush with $96 million in funding from Amber Infrastructure Group's National Digital Infrastructure Fund, the Portsmouth-based fiber broadband startup is aiming high with its initial deployment, which will begin in the South of England. The company plans to reach more than a million premises within the next decade.

"ADTRAN has matched our ambitious pace with delivering our network into Southampton in a matter of months, and I look forward to developing a stronger partnership over the coming years,” said Parbutt.

According to Adtran, the company's TA5000 gigabit service platform, which is designed specifically for fiber-to-the-home and vectored DSL deployments, will be key to achieving this goal.

Toob began rolling out its network using Adtran's technology in Southhampton last month. The company is advertising speeds of up to 900Mb/s symmetrical connections to homes and businesses without usage caps where available.

Adtran's Influence Grows

In the last few months, Adtran's influence in the network space has expanded with a series of announcements designed to ease the deployment of new technologies by service providers.

Earlier this month, the Huntsville Alabama-based networking firm lept into the cantankerous SD-WAN market with a new in-house platform.

Unlike it's larger competitors, Adtran's isn't targeting enterprises. Instead the company has its sights set on helping small-to-medium-size businesses and distributed enterprises modernize their WANs.

In August, Adtran announced a cloud-based network performance testing service designed to streamline newly mandated service provider compliance testing. The service is targeted at service providers receiving aid from the Connect America Fund (CAF).

Alongside its new network monitoring services, Adtran also rolled out enhancements to its Mosaic platform designed to enhance network visibility at the home wireless level and a series of new 10G passive optical networking hardware.
