Adtran upgraded its Mosaic software-defined access suite with new features aimed at improving network visibility in the home by utilizing WiFi analytics and equipment monitoring tech from SmartRG.
The company's goal is to provide service providers with a single user interface to manage network visibility, enabling them to make better-informed decisions based on subscriber needs.
“Convergence of these tools into a common interface is a major leap forward for service providers looking to offer intuitive WiFi monitoring, elevated subscriber insight, and assured 4K video quality across multi-vendor networks,” said Jeremy Harris, director of product line management at Adtran, in a statement.
The new tools, acquired with the purchase of SmartRG last December, enable live and historical analysis of home WiFi and management and maintenance of on-premises equipment.
This technology has the potential to improve the customer experience by allowing service providers to remotely diagnose and resolve issues, reduce the number of support calls, and eliminate the need for onsite diagnosis, said Michael Howard, a technology advisor at IHS Markit, in a prepared statement.
Service providers are also increasingly relying on managed modems and routers to differentiate themselves from their competition, Dell'oro Group analyst Jeff Heynen told SDxCentral in an interview.
Adtran Mosaic is available on more than 450 devices and systems including DOCSIS, xDSL, passive optical networks (PON), and fixed wireless access (FWA) technologies. “We are excited to capitalize on our acquisition of SmartRG by integrating their market-leading assets into our Mosaic software suite,” said Harris.
Adtran Expands 10G-PON PortfolioAdtran also announced three new 10G-PON terminals that will be powered by Mosaic and designed to address the ever increasing bandwidth driven by the rise of streaming services, cloud gaming, 8k video, virtual reality, and growing array of IoT devices.
“The fiber broadband access network needs to support the onslaught of extreme-bandwidth applications to preserve a network operator’s ability to monetize smart home and business opportunities,” Harris said in a statement.
Driving InnovationAdtran launched Mosaic in 2016 in a bid to help service providers using technologies like next-generation passive optical networking (NG-PON2) and G.fast to make the transition to open, programmable networks.
The Mosaic portfolio includes the Mosaic Cloud platform that combines modular apps with open-source control and orchestration; Mosaic OS, a Linux-based operating system optimized for SDN programmability; and the Programmable Network Elements, a multi-vendor networking software that integrates natively with open SDN-controlled access networks.
More so, the company has been influential in pushing open standards. In 2017 it formed the Mosaic Open Network Alliance and the following year it launched the Broadband Forum initiative to develop tools to test network systems.
