Nuage Networks, a venture of Nokia, offers Virtualized Services Platform (VSP) as a vendor-neutral platform to create the cloud, ranging from small, private clouds to large, enterprise clouds. It’s a software-defined networking (SDN) product that virtualizes data center network infrastructure and connects compute resources when they are created. VSP is an open and scalable solution that aims to meet the demands of multi-tenant data centers while eliminating vendor lock-in. Nuage summarizes it as a ” cloud networking framework that glues together your infrastructure, orchestration platforms, applications and legacy assets.”
Nuage’s VSP is comprised of three parts:
- Virtualized Service Directory (VSD): is the policy engine for the overall platform; network engineers use VSD to make templates that define network functionality for a specific set of resources and users. It may be deployed as a standalone or in a cluster. When it comes to analyzing performance management, IT administrators can define rules in VSD for collecting data, such as customizing a routine for gathering data, rolling averages and samples, plus Threshold Crossing Alerts (TCAs).
- Virtualized Service Controller (VSC): an SDN Controller that uses OpenFlow and OVSDB management protocol to distribute important switching and routing information to hypervisors within the virtual data center network.
- Virtual Routing and Switching (VRS): acts as Nuage’s own version of the Open vSwitch, and installs into the hypervisor for software networking. As described in its product data sheet, “it encapsulates and de-encapsulates user traffic, enforcing L2-L4 traffic policies as defined by VSD” and it acts as a gateway for bare metal servers. In virtualized server environments, VSR runs multiple hypervisors and container-ready platforms.
Nuage Networks VSC Features
Nuage Networks VSC works alongside both the VSD and VRS to make up Nuage’s VSP SDN strategy. Categorized through the VSD, the VSC offers a full view of per-tenant network and service topologies, and represents network service templates. VSC communicates with the VRS software, and is able to drive network virtualization efforts between Layers 2 through 4.
Working as the network control plane for data centers, Nuage Networks VSC has a full view of per-tenant network and service topologies. With the VSC, virtual routing and switching constructs are created to program the networking forwarding plane with OpenFlow. Several VSC instances can be organized across data centers by using MP-BGP.
