NEC Corporation is a $35 Billion global technology leader with a 100 year history of innovation in advanced IT, communications, and managed services. A pioneer in open, programmable networks, NEC was first to market in 2011 with an enterprise-class Software-defined Networking solution.
The award-winning NEC ProgrammableFlow(r) Networking Suite provides an OpenFlow network fabric enabling complete network virtualization and allowing customers to easily deploy, control, monitor and manage multi-tenant network infrastructure. This architecture, installed today in production globally, delivers better utilization of all IT assets, and helps provide ongoing investment protection as customers add functionality or upgrade their networks. NEC’s approach simplifies network administration and provides a programmable interface for unifying the deployment and management of network services with the rest of IT infrastructure.
NEC’s complete SDN solution includes a centralized controller, the ProgrammableFlow PF6800, now compliant with both OpenFlow 1.3 and 1.0, the PF5240 OpenFlow Hybrid switch (works in both OpenFlow and legacy environments), the PF5820 Core 10GbE switch, the PF1000 virtual switch for Hyper-V environments and the newest addition: the PF5248 10GbE Hybrid Switch. In March of 2014 NEC introduced the ProgrammableFlow Unified Network Coordinator (UNC) providing network orchestration of multi-SDN controllers (OpenFlow, overlay, tunneling and others) for data center interconnect. The UNC, which was selected as Best of Show in Management at Interop 2014, provides 10X scalability over previous controllers and scales up to 2000 switches across data centers or domains of a large enterprise.
NEC’s participation in all Open Networking Foundation PlugFests, and demonstrated interoperability with eight partners at Interop 2012 and 2013, underscoring the greater flexibility in data plane designs that can be achieved with open standards. NEC has also rolled out the NEC SDN Application Center, which leverages the PF6800 RESTful interface, providing integration management, security and optimization applications into a SDN environment.
NEC was the first company to receive the Certificate of Compliance from the Open Networking Foundation (ONF) for the ProgrammableFlow PF5200 series of OpenFlow hybrid switches. This confirms compliance with the open networking standards affirmed by the ONF and it’s member companies.
NEC is a gold member of the OpenDaylight consortium, contributing their Virtual Tenant Networking (VTN) technology. VTN provides network virtualization with isolated, secure, virtual networks and is integral to the ProgrammableFlow solution shipping now.
