Barefoot Networks has created technology that lifts the logic and algorithms for forwarding plane from hardware into software and we have achieved this while delivering screaming fast performance.
This is a major breakthrough for the networking industry, which has been held hostage by fixed-function forwarding planes for the past 20 years.
Barefoot Networks is a startup founded in 2013 by industry veterans. Barefoot is a merchant chip company which sells programmable switch ASICs and production-quality switches in low volume for use in evaluations and trials. Additionally, the company sells software licenses for novel applications that run on our programmable switches.
Barefoot Networks scored deals with a trio of China-based technology companies to deploy its Tofino programmable switch. The companies include Alibaba Group, Baidu, and Tencent Holding, which are set to deploy Tofino switches running open source P4 language, targeted at programmable forwarding plane technology. Financial terms of the deals were not released.
