Cloud networks have proven their ability to massively scale to accommodate enormous compute capacity, multiple tenants and diverse applications. This cloud expansion brings challenges of frequently changing overlay topologies, diverse policy enforcement and rapid deployment of sophisticated networks. Netronome and Nuage Networks from Nokia have applied new thinking to the problem of delivering massively scalable and highly programmable SDN solutions within and across the datacenter. The Virtualized Service Platform (VSP) provides elasticity and automation for some of the world’s most demanding clouds.
Because SDN overlays successfully add much needed flexibility, they are being applied to a wider range of applications raising the bar for latency and packet rates. New schemes consuming many CPU cores to support virtual switching, encap/decap of tunnel headers, and fine-grained policy enforcement can become a burden on cloud servers. This creates a strong incentive for disruptive innovation. Netronome will discuss how hardware acceleration with their10/25/40GbE Agilio SmartNIC can increase both throughput and server efficiency in SDN clouds powered by Nuage Networks from Nokia.
We will demonstrate how the Agilio SmartNIC from Netronome meets this grand challenge in comparison to software only networking on virtual machines managed by Nuage Networks VSP. We will also describe Netronome’s innovative Express Virtio (XVIO) technology that marries high-performance VM communication paths while maintaining VM migration and native Linux compatibility.
