HPE/Intel Partner Ecosystem Webinar Featuring ACS: Smart Edge – Enabling MEC for the Enterprise
The HPE/Intel Partner Ecosystem webinar featuring ACS covers one of the many interesting network convergent technologies. In technology, as in nature; species naturally converge and improve. There is a continuous advancing ebb and flow, which hits tipping points for breakthrough. Advancements in general purpose silicon, virtualization of compute, SDN’s control and user plane separation, VNFs, software languages, and use case driving technologies such as Smart Phones, AI, AR, Tablets have enabled the introduction of Multi-access Edge Computing.
Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) is a compute and network architecture concept that enables cloud computing capabilities and an IT service environment at the edge of a mobile network. MEC also is an aggregation point for other access technologies, such as Ethernet, Wi-Fi, LTE, Lora and other legacy networks. The anchor driving force behind MEC is to run applications and perform related processing tasks closer to the device, robotic, employee, and customer. This results in minimizing network congestion and improved application performance. This new technology enables MEC technology to be leveraged for new use cases in various verticals, such as Retail (e.g. electronics store), Transportation (e.g. Seaport), Manufacturing (e.g. automobile factory) and Municipalities (e.g. city sign management). MEC technology is designed to be implemented one hop from the user in the retail store, at a seaport, on the factory floor, on a street corner, etc.
A basic premise of MEC is to be foundationally designed as a secure environment. Threat vectors and threating organizations are growing exponentially, while users demand their digital persona to be safe and available everywhere and in all facets of their life. Once the secure MEC environment is in place in the respective verticals, it then provides a flexible and rapid deployment platform for new applications and services in each unique ecosystem.
ACS will provide some of our early insights into MEC. We will predominantly be looking at MEC from the Enterprise or Use Case focal point.
