2014 was punctuated with several learning opportunities here at SDNCentral, thanks to our great community full of expertise, knowledge, and the eagerness to share both. In the past year, many organizations and companies offered up their time and experience to teach us all something new during SDNCentral webinars and DemoFridays. With 2015 right around the corner, we wanted to remind you of some of the presentations that stood out.
Many thanks to everyone who presented this year and broadened our understanding of software-defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV). And now, drumroll please: In no particular order, here are the best webinars and DemoFridays of 2014.
OpenDaylight Helium (DemoFriday)
This webinar focused on the OpenDaylight Project’s second software release, Helium. Presenters Neela Jacques and Colin Dixon highlighted the 11 new protocols and applications included in Helium and showed how its release is driving SDN adoption.
High Availability in NFV (Wind River DemoFriday)
Featuring a closer look at Wind River’s Titanium Server, this DemoFriday demonstrated how NFV is helping communication service providers (CSPs) increase agility and curb operational costs. We saw how the Titanium Server — a carrier-grade software product — improved real-time performance with 99.9999 percent uptime.
SDN Optimization (Calient, Cumulus Networks, InMon DemoFriday)
These three introduced us to mouse and elephant flows and their impact on traffic patterns in data centers. Together, they demonstrated a programmable hybrid data center network based on real-time traffic flows. The demo included an SDN controller created by Calient using InMon‘s sFlow and detects=ing elephant flows between bare metal top-of-rack switches on Cumulus Linux.
OpenStack Cloud Networking (PLUMgrid DemoFriday)
Too many OpenStack projects are cut short due to a lack of necessary tools to power a production cloud. In this DemoFriday, PLUMgrid set out to solve the problem with its OpenStack Networking Suite that uses a distributed, VXLAN-based overlay network to overcome the shortcomings of other OpenStack networking products.
Cisco Application-Centric Infrastructure (Cisco DemoFriday)
Looking to a policy-driven solution, Cisco showcased how its Application-Centric Infrastructure (ACI) and Application Policy Infrastructure Controller (APIC) deliver software flexibility with hardware scalability. The DemoFriday gave a first-hand look at how to use APIC under the Cisco ACI fabric to address changing IT challenges.
High-Performance NFV (6WIND and Red Hat DemoFriday)
These two teamed up together to highlight 6WINDGate NFV packet processing software alongside Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform. With tips on how to build NFV infrastructure and increase performance for VNFs, this DemoFriday showed how 6WIND and Red Hat products can enhance network performance.
OpenFlow + OpenDaylight (SDNCentral/ONF Webinar)
The Open Networking Foundation (ONF) curates one of the main SDN standards, OpenFlow. Together with SDNCentral, the ONF hosted an educational webinar to highlight how SDN and OpenFlow can be brought to the broader market. The webinar covers OpenFlow from a developer’s standpoint, with software architect Andrew Pearce showing how he used OpenFlow to design a network tap application.
NFV and SDN for Carrier Networks (Aricent Webinar)
Aricent experts highlighted carrier SDN and NFV applications such as a cloud-based evolved packet core (EPC), virtual customer premises equipment (CPE), a virtual wireless LAN access controller, and virtual OSS. They also showed how SDN and NFV can solve certain service provider network challenges, and how to deploy network routing for multitenant, virtualized solutions.
Network Virtualization (Nuage Networks Webinar)
On the heels of SDNCentral’s popular 2014 Network Virtualization Report, this Nuage Networks-sponsored webinar shared valuable insights into the network virtualization market as well as what 2015 has in store for network virtualization as a whole. The webinar also discussed the network virtualization strategies of some organizations.
Cisco ACI & Citrix NetScaler (Citrix DemoFriday)
This DemoFriday showed the use of Cisco ACI running Layer 2-3 with Citrix NetScaler managing Layer 4-7 services. The demonstration helped show how SDN has come so far in such a short time, and it highlighted the progression of service integration and automation, including how DevOps expertise can help in managing infrastructure.
