Verizon Makes SD-WAN Platform Available to its Wholesale Customers

Verizon is offering its software-defined wide-area network (SD-WAN) platform to its wholesale customers. The Verizon SD-WAN is powered by Cisco Meraki, and designed to allow wholesale customers more control over internal network operations and costs.

The move adds SD-WAN services to the Virtual Network Services portfolio of its Verizon Partner Solution (VPS) division. VPS is a wholesale service provider offering voice, data, and Internet products to 150 countries.

The VPS SD-WAN service includes the ability to send traffic over different operator networks; central management and control over services and routing; Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) security; and centralized software-defined networking (SDN) control and policy management.

“Verizon’s SD-WAN solution essentially gives enterprises the best of both worlds – the power of the Internet and the performance and reliability of a private IP network – to help them keep up with the continued growth of network traffic,” said Eric Cevis, president of VPS, in a statement. “Network traffic demand continues to increase due to SaaS [software-as-a-service] applications, cloud migrations, video and IoT [Internet of Things]. SD-WAN improves bandwidth usage and enables the network to act as a sensor to enhance delivery of applications.”

Cisco Meraki Powered

Verizon initially launched a managed SD-WAN product with Cisco in 2015. The product tapped Cisco’s software-defined Virtual Managed Services (VMS) and Intelligent WAN (IWAN) platforms. The VMS platform is used to allow enterprise customers to order SD-WAN services, while IWAN supports scaling and security.

The carrier in 2016 partnered with Viptela to add a multi-vendor component to its SD-WAN product. Viptela earlier this year was acquired by Cisco for $610 million.

The SD-WAN space continues to generate heat, with a number of operators offering the service. A number of large telecommunications and cable service providers are selling SD-WAN products to their enterprise customers.

A recent survey from 451 Research found that 10 percent of U.S. companies have already deployed SD-WAN, another one-fifth are planning to in the next year, and 30 percent are considering a deployment.
