Verizon Business expanded its partnership with Cisco today to offer three new flavors of managed SD-WAN.

Verizon customers can now take advantage of fully-managed or co-managed SD-WAN via Cisco’s Viptela platform. Previously, Verizon offered a self-managed SD-WAN based on the platform.

According to Verizon, the co-managed option allows customers to take control of their SD-WAN security and application policies while leaving fault, performance, and configuration up to the service provider. Verizon claims co-managed SD-WAN is ideal for customers with smaller IT teams as it allows them to make changes to policy and security on the fly without having to worry about the day-to-day operation of the WAN.

Alternatively, Verizon now offers a fully-managed SD-WAN that is aimed at smaller branch office deployments. The offering comes equipped with Cisco’s ISR1100 series SD-WAN appliances.

Cisco’s branch-focused Meraki platform also received the managed SD-WAN treatment. Verizon, which has been offering Meraki as a service for more than 3 years, has added new capabilities, including those necessary to aid the provisioning of smart cameras on the platform.

Verizon’s Co-Managed SD-WAN Strategy

Co-managed SD-WAN is nothing new for Verizon. The network operator and managed service provider began offering co-managed options in late 2019.

The move came in response to customer feedback that IT teams wanted more control of their WAN. Verizon was able to achieve this by building a customer-facing portal with API hooks to the company’s SD-WAN orchestrator.

By leveraging intent-based interfaces, Verizon claims it is removing roadblocks to managing multivendor platforms and deployments, thus allowing customers to implement features for a variety of vendor services with a single click.
