Security company Trend Micro announced at Amazon re:Invent 2016 that its Deep Security as-a-service is now available to purchase on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Marketplace.

Trend Micro offers Deep Security, the standalone product, which was already available on AWS Marketplace, and Deep Security as-a-service. Some customers prefer Deep Security, where the user manages and provisions the backend of the service, says Mark Nunnikhoven, VP, cloud research for Trend Micro. Others prefer Deep Security as-a-service, in which Trend Micro handles all of the backend updates and provisioning.

According to Nunnikhoven, the benefit of offering the services through AWS Marketplace is that customers who want the additional security capabilities of Deep Security or Deep Security as-a-service, can pay for it through their AWS bill.

Although AWS is already packaged with some security functions, Nunnikhoven says that, “as a partner we make sure that we work in a complimentary manner.”

In fact, AWS rolled out its new distributed denial of service (DDoS) shield today at Amazon re:Invent, which is designed to protect the user from large state attacks. AWS Shield can be thought as the inner layer of AWS’s security, Nunnikhoven says. AWS WAF is a web application firewall that helps protect users from common attacks like SQL injection or cross-site scripting, and this is the platform’s middle layer of security. Deep Security serves as the outer layer of security and is designed to protect the server running in AWS, or its EC2 instances.

Deep Security uses the context provided from running specific workloads to protect users from things like malware on Windows and Linux. It also provides users with visibility into hybrid IT workloads.

“Deep Security provides a number of security controls in one tool, making it a lot easier to manage and move faster, which is what AWS is all about — giving you a layered approach with one tool,” Nunnikhoven says.

In addition to AWS, Trend Micro’s Deep Security is available on other clouds like Azure and VMware. Trend Micro is a pure-play security company that has been around for 28 years and employs 5,500 people globally.
