T-Mobile US continues to tout its 5G geographic coverage superiority over domestic rivals Verizon and AT&T, with President of Technology Neville Ray this week also adding the title of "the most available 5G network in the world."
Ray made the proclamation during a keynote address at this week's MWC Los Angeles event. He explained that the carrier's multi-year $60 billion investment in network services has pushed T-Mobile US’ low-band 5G network coverage to 308 million people and mid-band 5G coverage to 185 million people.
“Today, we have hundreds of radio upgrades underway every week,” he said, adding that T-Mobile’s low-band 5G network covers more than double that of AT&T and fourfold that of Verizon. “This is the largest FDD (frequency division duplex) 5G network and the most available 5G network in the world.”
T-Mobile pushed its mid-band 5G coverage to an additional 20 million people since the end of July, and its low-band 5G network covers an additional 3 million people from three months prior.
“We’re well on our way to reaching 200 million people covered by the end of this year, and we’re targeting 300 million people by the end of 2023,” Ray said about the ongoing mid-band 5G deployments. “This is a huge undertaking when you consider that increasing from 200 million to 300 million people requires five times the covered land mass.”
Ray also highlighted multiple achievements that reinforce the operator’s technical leadership on 5G, starting with its August 2020 deployment of a 5G standalone core, which made T-Mobile the first operator globally to launch a nationwide standalone 5G network. “And today, T-Mobile continues to have the only nationwide standalone 5G network in the U.S.,” he said.
“Standalone 5G is the future of wireless, eliminating the need for an LTE anchor. And it gives us a massive opportunity to work with partners on developing advanced 5G services,” including applications that use network slicing, industrial IoT, and other advanced radio technologies, Ray said.
T-Mobile claims active trials are underway with major enterprises, including 12 of the Fortune 50, to develop applications and services for private 5G networks and mobile edge computing.
The operator was also the first to deploy 5G carrier aggregation, combining its 600 MHz and 2.5 GHz spectrum, to increase capacity and coverage. “We are making great progress on this capability and we’ll be rolling out a broader deployment this quarter,” Ray said.
Finally, Ray noted that T-Mobile Home Internet, a $50 a month fixed wireless offering, is now available to more than 30 million U.S. households in more than 600 cities and towns. “We now reach almost a quarter of all homes in America, which makes T-Mobile the country’s fourth-largest internet service provider in terms of coverage,” he said.
