NetApp expanded its Spot portfolio to include security features. With the latest addition of Spot Security, the vendor claims customers can now control, secure, and optimize their CloudOps “all in one Spot.”

“Spot Security is a natural extension of the Spot product portfolio, which give customers of all sizes and all verticals the ability to understand exactly all the relationships in their cloud infrastructure, and from this relationship of resources, understand what security risks, and what security threats they have across their cloud-native stack,” said Amiram Shachar, VP and GM of Spot by NetApp. “This is something that I think every DevOps, every SecOps team needs to have in their toolbox.”

NetApp went "all-in on cloud" around five years ago and copied and pasted all of its storage offerings to the cloud. The company last year acquired cloud cost management platform provider Spot to bolster its application driven infrastructure (ADI) business. As Spot’s founder and CEO, Shachar joined NetApp after the acquisition.

He notes NetApp has four pillars: DataOps, DevOps, FinOps, and the new SecOps.

“We're already in the path of your storage, we're already in the path of your CI/CD, we're already in the path of how you manage your costs,” Shachar said. “We need to be in the path of how you keep great hygiene, and how you keep all the best practices and how we make sure to help you not to make any mistake in your configuration so you can secure your product the right way.”

NetApp claims the Spot Security service offers 360-degree visibility into users’ cloud environments due to the way the Spot platform aggregates infrastructure data. It collects data across the stack, from the lowest level of servers to high-level information about the application and containers.

“We're just going to take the data we already have and combine it with security experts, and understand the relationship between all of your resources so we can tie every security threat or every security risk that you have in your environment with specific resources that can be affected,”  Shachar explained.

Customers typically get this visibility through either buying applications security or infrastructure security products, but with Spot NetApp, “they're basically getting everything in one package," he claimed.

Abnormalities Detection Using AI and ML

Spot Security can also help users analyze, identify, report, and remediate risks, abnormal behaviors, and misconfigurations across multi-cloud infrastructure using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), according to Shachar.

“Our AI and ML is trying to predict for every request that comes into the platform,” Shachar said. “And if we see something that is abnormal, we immediately tell the customer.”

He added “we're actually leveraging the data that we have on the customers' infrastructure and applying a predictive AI model of understanding what will happen next. And this is something that we're using very heavily.”

Spot Security will be available on Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure after private preview.
