McAfee Enterprise’s secure access service edge (SASE) business has a new name — Skyhigh Security — after Symphony Technology Group (STG) spun off the business unit in late January and formed Trellix from what remained.
While Trellix formed from McAfee and FireEye’s extended detection and response (XDR) businesses, Skyhigh remains focused on the red hot security services edge (SSE) market, where it retains a leadership position, according to Gartner’s most recent Magic Quadrant report.
At the heart of Skyhigh’s offering is McAfee’s Mvision platform, which includes Cloud Access Security Broker, secure web gateway (SWG), zero-trust network access (ZTNA), and data loss prevention (DLP).
The technologies, in particular its DLP functionality, form the basis for what Skyhigh calls a “data-aware” SSE platform.
“We think of the data loss prevention, particularly on the endpoint, as a competitive differentiator than just cloud-only providers,” CEO Gee Rittenhouse said. “No matter where your data sits, and moves, and collaborates, and is shared, and is created, that policy and that security follows that data.”
Rittenhouse joined the then unnamed company in the wake of the spinoff, after seven years at Cisco, where he most recently led the company’s cybersecurity business.
Prior to the spinoff, McAfee was a strong contender in the emerging SASE market, which melds elements of cloud-based security, edge compute, and SD-WAN into a single product. However, the company lacks an SD-WAN of its own preferring, instead, to partner with third-party vendors to offer a multi-vendor SASE architecture.
With the pivot to Skyhigh, the company has embraced Gartner’s SSE product category, which includes the SASE security stack without the SD-WAN baggage.
“Skyhigh Security has emerged as a dedicated cloud security company that is laser focused on propelling businesses forward with a comprehensive and converged approach to data security,” William Chisholm, managing partner at STG, said in a statement. “We’re committed to investing in this business which is one of the most important markets in security, SSE.”
