Verizon Shakes Up Its Board
Verizon made two changes to its board of directors following the retirement of two prominent board members. In a statement, M. Frances Keeth, now former lead director of the board, said that the changes are to position Verizon for “continued leadership in the 5G era.”
Lowell McAdam retired as chairman of Verizon’s board of directors. McAdam has served as chairman since January 2012, serving through the majority of his tenure as Verizon CEO. He was CEO from August 2011 to August 2018. He will remain on the board until May 2.
The board elected Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg as McAdam’s replacement as chairman. Vestberg took over for McAdam as CEO in August 2018, and has served on the board since June 2018. He initially joined Verizon in April 2017, as its executive vice president of network and technology and CTO.
Verizon also elected Clarence Otis as the lead director of the board, succeeding Keeth, who is retiring from the board in May. Otis has served on the board since 2006. He was formerly the CEO of Darden Restaurants. Keeth has also served on the board since 2006.
Another board member, Richard Carrion, said that he will not stand for re-election at the company’s annual meeting in May. Carrion has served on the board since 2000.
Vestberg’s and Otis’s new roles will be effective March 8, 2019.
Verizon currently has 12 board members.
