Fortinet kicked off Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) annual re:Invent today by catapulting a spate of services into the public cloud provider’s marketplace designed to ease multi-and hybrid-cloud adoption.
The announcement marks Fortinet’s latest effort to stitch together on-premises and cloud networks using its virtualized firewall and SD-WAN appliances. The approach allows customers to treat the cloud as any other data center on their WAN.
The services announced today don’t, however, introduce any new functionality. Instead, they focus on addressing the complexity inherent to adopting cloud architectures securely.
“When it comes to security, many have found that the biggest threat to their cloud deployments is not the threats themselves, but misconfiguration,” Vince Hwang, senior director of dynamic cloud security at Fortinet, wrote in a recent blog post. “Many teams need help rationalizing and designing a viable roadmap to successfully deploy the right solutions and cloud architectures to realize their digital accelerations goals.”
Jump-Starting Cloud AdoptionFortinet’s new consulting services provide various degrees of handholding in this regard. The company’s JumpStart service provides customers with a five-day consultation that promises to help customers design and deploy “optimal” architectures using the its FortiGate-VM next-generation firewalls or FortiWeb-VM web application firewalls on AWS. The service also includes two virtual machine (VM) instances running the security vendor's firewall platforms that are available to the customer for a year.
The second service tackles cloud security posture assessment for customers looking to suss out vulnerabilities or configuration errors in their deployments. If it discovers any issues, Fortinet provides recommendations for remediation.
Meanwhile, for customers that haven’t started their cloud migration or aren’t sure where to start, Fortinet’s network and application security service is a white-glove offering tailored to the customer’s unique needs or requirements.
“Not every organization has the time or in-house expertise to set up a holistic security architecture across private and public-cloud environments that is resilient enough to withstand the continuous changes in the threat landscape,” Hwang wrote.
To address this challenge, Fortinet's final offer works with its customers to identify business goals, existing security tools, and projects, and it aligns them under a custom cloud migration roadmap.
All three services are available now on the AWS marketplace.
Fortinet’s Multi-Cloud StrategyToday's announcement comes weeks after Fortinet teamed up with Microsoft to drive its firewalls into the Azure Virtual WAN (vWAN).
vWAN is a cloud on-ramp that allows customers to extend their SD-WAN overlay to workloads and services running on Azure. Fortinet has announced a series of similar integrations with public cloud and colocation providers, including AWS, Google Cloud, Megaport, and Equinix over the last few years.
By adding its next-generation firewalls to the mix, Fortinet now supports multi-and hybrid-cloud networking scenarios using the same SD-WAN and firewall policy used across the network, Hwang told SDxCentral in an earlier interview.
