Fortinet announced a menagerie of service provider wins this week. Six service providers — Fusion Connect, HubOne, Kazteleport, Optical Networks, Thrive, and TNS — have added Fortinet's Secure SD-WAN to their managed service portfolios.
Also today, BT Security tapped Fortinet as one of three “critical partners” to supply products and services that BT will use in its global managed services portfolio.
Fortinet's SD-WAN platform consolidates advanced routing, an integrated next-generation firewall, and SD-WAN orchestration into a single offering. The service can be deployed as an appliance, virtual machine, or in the cloud.
By combining SD-WAN and security functionality, Fortinet claims it can address both branch connectivity and the expanded security perimeter resulting from increased reliance on cloud and software-as-a-service applications.
Additionally, Fortinet has taken steps to make its SD-WAN platform easier to deploy. The vendor claims its hardware can integrate into a variety of existing deployment environments.
With an eye on service providers, Fortinet has also enabled co-management models across its services. This enables service providers and end customers to share control over deployments. A service provider might handle maintenance and monitoring, while the end-user might control deployments and management.
Fortinet's Reach GrowsFortinet has made steady gains since launching its SD-WAN offering. The company has consistently listed SD-WAN as a key revenue driver for the security-focused vendor.
A recent Omedia report found Fortinet now holds the No. 3 spot behind VMware and Cisco with 12.3% of the worldwide SD-WAN revenue share.
Fortinet has continued to push forward with regular product updates and strategic acquisitions. The company has aggressively filled out its hardware portfolio, which utilizes custom ASICs to accelerate security workloads at line speeds. This year alone, the company has launched appliances targeting everything from home offices to hyperscale data centers.
Meanwhile, in July, the company became the latest SD-WAN vendor to adopt a secure access service edge (SASE) strategy, with the acquisition of security startup Opaq.
Penned by Gartner nearly a year ago, the category provides a framework for the convergence and delivery of cloud-based routing and security functions.
