Cradlepoint, an LTE-focused software-defined wide area networking (SD-WAN) vendor, introduced a new router that will allow it to extend its SD-WAN service to first responders, transit operators, and other field force and fleet-based organizations.
Because of their mobile nature, many of these customers rely upon a 4G LTE connection. The IBR1700 router is designed to be installed and connected to a vehicle’s ignition. It features an OBD-II port that performs vehicle diagnostics and will support two concurrent LTE connections across two different carriers.
It is also “ruggedized,” meaning the router can withstand vibration, extreme temperatures, and other environmental factors.
“First responders rely on constant data communications with their command center and other responders, which means they need to have an always-on WAN connection,” said Cradlepoint CMO Todd Krautkremer. “Just like in a branch, SD-WAN allows traffic to be steered down the optimal LTE connections at any time depending on policy.”
The LTE-focused SD-WAN service also provides Internet security with a firewall, intrusion detection systems/intrusion prevention systems (IPS/IDS), and web filtering.
This mobile router and SD-WAN service supports two concurrent cellular providers in real-time, but provides failover to two others — meaning these organizations can connect and have coverage nearly anywhere. Cradlepoint also supports FirstNet, the private cellular network for first responders.
For fleet managers, the ability to access location-based and telematics applications so they can track assets, enable safe driving programs, and proactively monitor vehicles for maintenance gives them added management and protection over their fleet.
The IBR1700 router is part of Cradlepoint’s NetCloud Solution Package, which delivers the SD-WAN as a cloud service and includes networking, security, management, and other Cradlepoint services. While the IBR1700 router is its mobile hardware for this package, the vendor has also released two other routers in the past month: an edge router for branch networks and an Internet of Things (IoT) router.
The NetCloud package also has a software-defined perimeter technology that assists in connecting in-vehicle IoT devices such as cameras, sensors, Point of Service terminals, and on-board digital signage.
Last month Cradlepoint moved its SD-WAN to a subscription-base model pricing. It now provides a wireless router and the software for one-, three-, or five-year subscriptions.
