Amazon Web Services (AWS) continued to dominate the rapidly expanding enterprise cloud market during the second quarter, maintaining a significant market share advantage over its smaller – but faster growing – rivals Microsoft and Google.

Synergy Research Group (SRG) and Canalys both found that total market spending topped $40 billion for the quarter, with the two firms reporting estimates within $5 billion of each other.

SRG reported that Q2 enterprise spending on cloud infrastructure services totaled $42 billion. This was a $2.7 billion jump from Q1 and marked a 39% increase year over year. In the past twelve months, the analyst firm said cloud market revenue reached $152 billion.

“You would not normally expect to see growth rates actually increasing in such a huge and rapidly developing market, yet once again that is what our research has shown,” SRG’s chief analyst John Dinsdale wrote in his report.

SRG reported that AWS’ market share jumped 10% sequentially, earning the cloud giant a 33% share of the market. Microsoft and Google occupied the second and third largest shares with 20% and 10%, respectively.

The following 20 cloud providers, including Alibaba, IBM, and Salesforce, made up another 28% of the market, with smaller service providers accounting for the rest.

“There remains a wealth of opportunity for smaller, more focused cloud providers, but it can be hard to look away from the eye-popping numbers coming out of the big three,” Dinsdale said.

Cloud Market Growth Hits 36% in Q2, Sustainability Initiatives Take Off

Canalys reported that the worldwide cloud market grew 36% to reach $47 billion in Q2. The firm reported the same top three companies as SRG ‒‒ AWS, Microsoft, and Google ‒‒ accounted for 61% of the market in the second quarter.

Canalys had AWS leading the pack with a 31% share of the market and 37% annual revenue growth. Microsoft was No. 2 with a 22% share and 51% annual revenue increase. Google followed with a smaller 8% market share, though it grew the most with a 66% revenue increase year over year.

Along with an increase in revenue, Canalys reported an increase in environmental sustainability efforts within the cloud market. “Awareness of the energy use and carbon emissions from digital services delivered from data centers operated by cloud service providers is growing. But the leading providers are also at the forefront of environmental resiliency efforts,” Canalys research analyst Blake Murray noted.

The cloud market’s ballooning sustainability goals mark good news for the planet and the industry as a whole. According to Murray, “the best practices and technology utilized by these companies will filter to the rest of the industry, while customers will increasingly use cloud services to relieve some of their environmental responsibilities and meet sustainability goals.”
