Performance and end-user monitoring company AppNeta today extended native support for Microsoft Azure and IBM Cloud, dedicated monitoring for SD-WAN deployments and domain name servers (DNS), and BGP analysis.
Boston-based AppNeta offers a single software-as-a-service (SaaS)-based monitoring platform, AppNeta Performance Manager. It provides end-to-end application delivery, end-user transaction monitoring, and deep packet inspection to monitor application and network usage.
The platform leverages monitoring points that are deployed inside a customer’s environment and connects to the network to collect and relay network and application data to the platform. Monitoring points can be deployed in both physical and virtual network infrastructures. The monitoring points provide path-based, flow-based, web-based, and packet-based visibility.
According to AppNeta CEO Matt Stevens, this latest update is meant to bring extended scale to its customers while also adding to the infrastructures and network elements the platform can monitor.
In terms of scale, the release “allows us to go well past 10,000 locations per customer,” Stevens said. “This is about the ability to reach out farther, more effectively, and frankly more cost-effectively to allow customers to instrument every place they do business at very broad scale.” AppNeta primarily focuses its services on the world's 5,000 largest companies.
The AppNeta platform has support for four public clouds: Microsoft Azure, IBM Cloud, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and Amazon Web Services (AWS). For Azure, Stevens said this “catches us up to what we’ve already done for AWS.” Now, AppNeta customers can take a monitoring point and deploy it directly as an instance in Azure.
Previously, the platform measured DNS performance in the context of another measurement, but with the update it can now measure dedicated DNS performance. This includes DNS servers and clustered DNS architecture. In addition, this monitoring capability is enhanced by bringing in BGP data, which shows all potential routes to customers and provides insight into route performance and availability.
The final update to the Performance Manager is support for SD-WAN. “The rise of SD-WAN is definitely a movement we’ve seen from a lot of our customers,” said Stevens. “What we also recognize is that while SD-WAN can go to great lengths to improve availability, it doesn’t always address things like performance in the way that it claims.”
AppNeta monitoring points for SD-WAN add context to the performance of end-users’ applications before, during, and after their SD-WAN deployment. According to Stevens, the platform can now verify an SD-WAN policy, ensure the SD-WAN is running properly, and police the performance of the SD-WAN once it’s running.
