Adtran today unveiled a sweeping expansion to its SDX series of software-defined access hardware. The company's portfolio now includes a wider array of fiber aggregation, access, and optical network terminals.
The company claims these new appliances will help to support a wider array of operator use cases while lowering the cost of ownership.
“Adtran is helping broadband providers of all sizes create their fiber access networks the way they should be,” said Adtran CTO Robert Conger, in a statement.
New to the Adtran software-defined access portfolio is the SDX 6320, which the company claims is the first virtual optical line terminals to integrate combo passive optical networks. Alongside the SDX 6320, Adtran is also launching a sealed and passively cooled model, the SDX 6312, for use outdoors.
Adtran today also announced support for combo passive optical networks on its Total Access 5000 fiber access platform. The company claims this new capability makes the platform the highest density 10 Gb/s passive optical network appliance available in the U.S. market.
The TA5000 eliminates the need to deploy two discrete appliances for gigabit and 10 Gb/s symmetrical passive optical network line terminals, enabling customers to realize a claimed 75% space savings, 66% reduction in power consumption, and 50% lower capital expenditure.
Adtran is also launching a 10 Gb/s optical network terminal and a multi-terabit-capable aggregation switch. The SDX 620 series optical network terminals are designed for use in enterprise and residential networks. Meanwhile, the SDX 8305 is a 2 Tb/s aggregation switch designed to meet the demand for 100 Gb/s Ethernet connectivity in central office or exchange locations.
Branching OutOver the past year, Adtran has aggressively expanded its hardware and software offerings with no sign of slowing down.
Last October, the company threw its hat in the ring and entered the competitive SD-WAN market. Later that month, the company announced a partnership with United Kingdom-based broadband provider toob to deliver full-fiber internet service to more than 100,000 premises by the end of 2021.
By February, Adtran had launched a new SD-WAN appliance targeting small to midsize businesses. And in late April, the telecommunications vendor announced partnerships with Deutsche Telekom and Orange Business Services.
For Deutsche Telekom, Adtran is helping to develop an open SD-access network for gigabit internet service. Meanwhile, Orange is working with the vendor to develop fixed fiber access networks.
