When you think about telco NFV, it’s important to remember that there are several considerations to take into account, but the most integral is the interconnectivity between a telecom operator’s IP/MPLS network and the cloud.
Right now, the biggest change for telco network infrastructures is the transition to include software-defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV). To fully capitalize on the benefits of these technologies and deliver on NFV’s promise of agility, there are two aspects related to connectivity that the cloud environment supporting the virtual network functions (VNFs) must offer:
- Seamless interconnection with the existing IP/MPLS network infrastructure
- Integration with the cloud environment to enable automation
In this a special DemoFriday with Ericsson on September 18th, our presenters will delve into the first must-have. The method that offers the best scalability for providing a seamless connection from the VNFs to the existing IP/MPLS infrastructure is to extend the IP/MPLS encapsulation all the way up to the virtual machines that are running the different VNFs.
Connectivity between the vSwitch and the DC Gateway then is operated by the SDN Controller with a protocol like BGP. An MP-BGP session is established between the SDN Controller and the DC Gateway in order to exchange L3 VPN and label information.
To make this seamless connectivity a possibility, a set of control protocols have to be deployed between different elements, such as the overall orchestrator, the OpenStack Cloud Management Platform, the SDN Controller, the vSwitch, and the DC Gateway. A key element of this solution is the REST API between OpenStack Neutron and the SDN Controller. During the live demo, Ericsson will present an SDN-based L3VPN solution that uses this OpenStack Neutron and OpenDaylight integration.
