SDN Networking: Fast is the New Cheap, a Fireside Chat With Arista Networks
Our series of fireside chats with Arista Networks continues with a conversation about how “fast” is becoming the new “cheap” in networking requirements. This third video in the series features Arista Vice President of Marketing Doug Gourlay and SDNCentral’s Matt Palmer as they discuss changing attitudes regarding what customers expect from their networks.
In the past, Mr. Gourlay says, customers felt internal pressure to make the network cheaper. At every budget cycle, customers always wanted to know how they could make the network even cheaper than it was before. But more recently, Arista has noticed focus shifting from reducing the cost of the network to increasing the speed of it.
Mr. Gourlay cites the example of one customer who was asked to make network provisioning as fast as possible. They faced the challenge of reducing provisioning from weeks to minutes so the network could keep up with servers and storage. Once they accomplished their goal, requests to make the network cheaper began dying down, replaced instead with appeals to make the network even faster so it could be more responsive to business requirements.
