The emergence of software-defined networking (SDN) in today’s marketplace has opened up opportunities across the globe for a number of organizations. Businesses want to test the limits of their current network infrastructure, and SDN offers the chance to embrace another option – one that leads to heightened optimization, quicker time to market, and lowered operational expenses, just to name a few benefits.
Although still relatively new, the advantages of SDN have been well advertised, but new research questions the current viability of SDN’s promise. “SDN Expectations,” an independent market research report commissioned by Avaya, shows that while SDN might have a bright future ahead, organizations are still hesitant to wholly dive in. Polling over 1,400 IT professionals from 15 countries, the research highlights important statistics relating to adoption, benefits, and the high SDN expectations set by industry experts.
With 94 percent of large companies already exploring SDN, its industry impact cannot be ignored. 97 percent of those polled even agreed that SDN could solve at least one networking problem within their company. SDN expectations are at an all time high, but IT professionals still believe the reality doesn’t quite meet the hype.
While the research certainly shows that some are reticent to bring current SDN offerings into their business completely, SDN is by no means on its way out. IT professionals have long looked for answers to difficult networking problems, and with SDN’s buzz upping the ante, many still have lofty expectations for the technology in the long term. This could be why 88 percent of respondents expect to fully deploy SDN into production at some level over the next 1.6 years, on average.
Can SDN promises find their place in today’s reality, and more importantly, in business deployments?
