With organizations consolidating networking services and collapsing multiple network appliances into single platforms, Citrix showed how its NetScaler application delivery controller (ADC) platform provides ADCaaS in an OpenStack environment.
Sridhar Devarapalli, director of NetScaler product management at Citrix Systems, showed how NetScaler SDX satisfies multitenant requirements, and he took questions from participants after the presentation. Does it integrate with SCVMM?
Citrix: Citrix Systems does have integration with SCVMM but not currently through NCC.
Does it integrate with CPBM (CloudPlatform Business Manager)
Citrix: Not currently. There is, however, integration at work with open source CloudStack and Citrix CloudPlatform.
Citrix: No plan currently to support Geneve.
Is the demo using Icehouse [the most recent OpenStack release]?
Citrix: Yes it is.
I want to ask again about Geneve, which replaces VXLAN and NVGRE, as these network overlay technologies provide for true multitenancy not bound to hardware limitations (SDX is ridiculously expensive). Why no roadmap support in NetScaler?
Citrix: We haven’t heard much from our customers regarding support for Geneve. If there is demand, it wouldn’t be hard to add this to our encap/decap options.
What happens if consumption surpasses capacity of the appliance?
Citrix: User will get a message saying “system overcapacity,” and admin will get alerted that the system has run out of capacity.
So are there any safeguards to preventing a user from allocating more cores or instances being assigned to a tenant?
Citrix: It is the admin that sets up resource allocation. Tenants will only consume what has been allocated to them.
Is this type of OpenStack integration is available from F5 or other ADCs? What are the advantages for Citrix?
Citrix: Some ADC vendors do have integration with OpenStack (with varying maturity) but we think the NetScaler integration in OpenStack stands out.
Can NetScaler CC assign additional public IPs to the customer’s ADC instances? How is that done?
Citrix: Yes. Each time a new VIP is created, it is handled by NCC and a new public IP (Neutron port) is assigned to the NetScaler instance assigned to the tenant.
What aspects are unique for the Citrix solution relative to other ADCs? What can you do that others can’t in terms of the integration and automation with the OS?
Citrix: The Citrix solution has a lot more flexibility and control over the isolation and resource allocation policies for the OpenStack tenants. We allow the cloud provider to literally treat all the appliances as an aggregate pool of capacity and provide very efficient ways of using that capacity to provide self-service ADCaaS for different tenants. Automation and control are two opposing forces, wherein many solutions force you to relinquish control for better automation. With the Citrix solution, you can maintain full control while driving end-to-end automation

You’ve shown a lot of setup procedures. Can you speak to usage reporting?
Citrix: Reporting is a key aspect of cloud usage. NCC contains rich information on operational status of the ADC deployments with various methods of exporting that information.
If the SDX is only supporting five instances, is it possible the admin can allocate more instances than what the box is capable of providing, especially with other Gold members?
Citrix: Actually, SDX platforms support more than five instances and can actually support up to 80 dedicated instances on the high end platforms. Regarding allocating more instances than what the box can provide, you definitely have the option to use Admin Partitions, which is our high-density multitenancy solution. Using a mix of admin partitions and dedicated SDX instances forms a great multitenancy strategy that balances density with isolation. Each SDX instance can further be divided into partitions, giving even more control to our users to mix and match different isolation methods on the same physical appliance.
Load balancing as a service (LBaaS) running in user space forces multiple traffic paths through the hypervisor/vswitch. What scale and SLA issues does this present?
Citrix: The Citrix solution does not restrict LBaaS to just virtual appliances running in user space. We give full range of flexibility to the administrator to choose between any of our appliances (physical, virtual, multitenant) to power LBaaS. The operational model from a cloud consumption standpoint remains the same irrespective of which appliances are being used, for both cloud tenants as well as the provider. The provider can guarantee SLAs that are always met across all NetScaler appliances.
Does NCC support VXLAN?
Citrix: NetScaler platforms support VXLAN, that NCC can enable.
How about NVGRE support?
Citrix: NVGRE support on NetScaler is being planned for as part of the roadmap.
