Thanks to all who joined us for the Nokia NFVI Report Webinar, Why Nokia’s OCP-compliant AirFrame and SDN Solutions form the perfect NFVi Foundation, where we learned about Nokia’s vision for the next steps of SDN, data infrastructure and how both of those topics can form the basis of a flexible and scalable NFV Infrastructure. After the webinar, we took questions from the audience but unfortunately ran out of time before we could answer everybody’s questions. You can read the Q&A below.
How is an end-end SDN platform different than using discrete SDN products for datacenter, SD-WAN, etc.?
Nokia: Many SDN solutions solve a particular problem: SD-WAN for VPN for example. But in reality organizations have much broader needs and SD-WAN is only one of them. They also need an SDN solution to host VNF in the datacenter and an SDN controller to move workloads to various locations. Using a discreet SDN solution for each one of those scenarios means the Service Provider need to integrate the control plane and policy of each controller in order to offer an end-to-end solution. Nuage platform on the other hand share the same management and control plane elements, so one can offer unify and comprehensive solution from the users in the branch office all the way to the applications in the datacenter where ever the location.
Are Communication Service Provider (CSP) more focused on SD-WAN, datacenter cloud or both?
Nokia: Actually both. SD-WAN is often the catalyst that enables the transformation, but quickly CSP realized the value of offering Value Added Services (VAS) hosted in the datacenter.
Are the built-in Nuage security features good enough for most Communication Service Provider (CSP)?
Nokia: Many of our customers use Nuage built-in firewalls to secure east-west traffic in the datacenter and that is already a huge security increase by isolating applications with only relevant/authorized elements. However, many also use our service chaining capabilities to redirect some traffic, deemed more sensitive to specialized security appliances. Nuage also offered, on top of all this, a Virtualized Security Services (VSS) which provides high-end analytics to better monitor your network and automatically reprogram it according to security thresholds you pre-set. This is the true value of SDN: the Software analytics taking action to make your network more secure.
