Security is a process and not a single function. How does the Software Security fit in?
Yes, correct. Most of the security functions can be abstracted and applied at multiple levels as opposed to single device. E.g. think of service chaining that helps to apply security as defense in depth. Things like NFV based architecture allows users to deploy multiple instances of security functions as needed.
What are the typical use cases of SDS? Is it limited to virtualized data centers or is it used in other environments as well?
No it is not limited to Data centers only, though most of the current use cases are found in data centers. The use of software defined security is expanding in the campus and branch with the widespread use of SD-WAN and increasing use of SDN in campus.
What are the key points to look at in terms of software definability when shopping for Software defined security?
Main thing to look for is first to identify what sort of problems you have or are trying to solve. Look at the requirements and match with what vendors have to offer in terms of not just software security, but also the various SDN/NFV platforms. How flexible and adaptable the solutions are along with scalability and viability of the solutions for the future.
