Juniper Networks has set out to overcome the challenges associated with traditional technology service management (ITSM) approaches, which create dissimilar test and production systems by transitioning to DevOps with Junos OS. In software-defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) environments, this leads to high consumption of operational resources, as well as additional complexity during the service creation and maintaining process. As stated in a recently published white paper, with Juniper DevOps, system developers and operators can unite to provide seamless delivery of high quality services, as well as faster service creation at a lower cost.
The white paper, “Transforming to DevOps with Junos OS,” argues that IT DevOps methodologies can help network systems developers and operators change their operation models for Juniper-based IP networking infrastructure. Additionally, it lays out certain features and capabilities of Juniper Networks’ Junos OS and how it can integrate into existing IT DevOps environments, as well as help build and manage networks so they offer continuous delivery – a lynchpin of DevOps.
DevOps, or development operations, is the orchestration of complex interdependent processes associated with software development and IT operations that speed up the production and deployment of products and services. In SDN and virtual environments, DevOps is essential to creating a more flexible, responsive infrastructure. For DevOps to be effective, they must nurture collaboration between developers and operations. With Junos OS and the creation of Juniper DevOps, customers can experience the benefits of this alliance, and better evolve to meet changing business needs as more and more customers transition to virtual environments.
The white paper points to challenges facing SDN and NFV in this space, including the difficult transformation of DevOps to NetOps, as well as the importance of integration. It also cites solutions that will lend Junos OS as a cornerstone in the larger Juniper DevOps strategy.
DevOps automation and deployment frameworks like Chef, Puppet, and Ansible have all been used to extend support for networking products. Through Juno OS, Juniper Networks can usher in similar capabilities to bring DevOps with Junos OS to service providers, implementers, operators, and even end users to better navigate changing networks.
