At its most basic level, LSO is a set of technology standards and products that provide orchestration and management integration among network systems, management software, and telecommunications IT software platforms such as the business support system (BSS) and operations support system (OSS).
Experts say that LSO provides services providers with the chance to improve their agility and be able to deliver digital services more quickly by incorporating an on-demand and self-provisioning model. But making the transformation from service provider to digital powerhouse comes with some challenges.
First, it requires service providers to transition away from their traditional ways of provisioning services and incorporate automation. Second, not all service providers will make the transition at the same pace, making it difficult for operators to become truly plug-and-play.
Nevertheless, LSO is making some inroads and its standardized APIs will allow networks, even from different vendors, communicate automatically.
