If I were perusing the market, looking through the sea of software defined networking (SDN)-saturated promos and pitches, there are only a few claims about any SDN product that would catch my eye for further investigation:
1. The product will work with the infrastructure I currently have.
2. The product is platform-independent.
3. The risk of implementation and scalability comes at a level that makes me as comfortable as I’m going to get when investing.
All of the deeper technological touch points, such as which protocols are supported or the actual automation/orchestration benefits, are things I’d leave to the CTO. If that were me — a decision maker who needs to evaluate a product’s first jump through the fiery hoop towards a purchase order — tomorrow’s DemoFriday™ is one I would watch. It addresses the simple laundry list of what I look for to determine if an SDN product is truly in a league of its own.
Regardless of which angle you’re approaching SDN from — be it learning, evaluating or implementing — this demo of a heavyweight controller should interest you. Watch and interact with Jothi Prakash Prabakaran (product manager), Archana Khetan (senior director of strategy and portfolio marketing, Data Center Group), and Bhushan Kanekar (distinguished engineer) as they present, live, the Extensible Network Controller (XNC) by Cisco.
