Debuted this last spring, NetApp’s new, global research and development lab runs a shared-services infrastructure 24/7 to push and test its hardware and software to the limits. Now NetApp DevOps teams are getting ready to harness the company’s own FlexPod integrated infrastructure platform and Cisco’s Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) to automate test scenarios and speed software time to market.
NetApp and Cisco teamed up in 2010 to manufacture and sell FlexPod integrated infrastructure solutions and recently hit the $3 billion mark in joint sales. In the video below, NetApp CTO Jay Kidd talks with Harry Petty, director of data center marketing at Cisco, about how FlexPod is integrating Cisco’s newly released ACI and using the joint solution in its lab to build a highly agile virtualized infrastructure that can be used for a wide range of test scenarios.
Already configured for the Nexus 9000, FlexPod now has a validated design that explains how to use ACI and FlexPod together, including a roadmap for deeper integration with management framework and application profiles. Software developers will now be able to build and automate test scenarios along with virtual instances to test different versions of software. They will also spin up virtual machines to control the load or test.
The lab is provisioned to stand up and spin up thousands of virtual machines an hour, with an aggregate capacity capable of running more than 1 million virtual machines at a time. Using FlexPod and ACI to manage test scenarios as applications, NetApp expects the joint solution will speed up its time for software and better utilize capital in the lab.
Kidd points out that if engineers are given ways to run tests faster or speed the development process, they’ll be quick to take advantage of them. NetApp anticipates the FlexPod solution with ACI will get more tests done earlier in the process, help DevOps teams find problems earlier, and help the company release higher quality code to market.
