DevOps at its core aims to deliver speed, efficiency, and collaboration for software and application development. While DevOps fundamentally is driven by improvements to development and operations culture and processes, it also needs the right infrastructure and automation to make the improvements possible.
In the video below, CA Technologies CTO John Michelsen talks about how Cisco’s Applications Centric Infrastructure (ACI) provides the infrastructure automation that DevOps needs to make infrastructure respond at the pace required by today’s business applications.
In spite of unified fabrics, virtualized services, and controller abstractions, today’s applications still often demand more scale, performance, and security than IT can provide. The need to support multitenancy at scale, to provide load balancing and security automatically, and to deliver visibility and simplified troubleshooting across virtual and physical networks contribute to an agility gap with yesterday’s infrastructure.
“When you think about all the different constraints and pressures for change you see in the infrastructure, it’s just mind-boggling,” Michelsen says.
DevOps evolved from the need to meet such competitive application demands with continuous application delivery. For some sectors, DevOps has helped drive frequency of application changes from 18 months, to quarterly, to daily, and finally down to multiple times a day.
But while the DevOps approach has improved culture, processes, and tools, traditional data center devices such as servers, network switches, and storage devices still limit much-needed automation and orchestration of hardware infrastructure.
Cisco ACI provides policy-driven network configuration that, together with CA Technologies’ Release Automation, provides the automation and orchestration DevOps needs. Cisco ACI enables on-demand infrastructure provisioning, enabling DevOps to easily and quickly make frequent hardware changes and multiple application endpoint configurations.
CA Technologies successfully is using Cisco ACI to accelerate DevOps processes by orders of magnitude. “It’s a dramatic way we’re improving our time to market for our customers, which is really the battleground for most businesses today,” Michelsen says.
