In this white paper, you’ll learn about a partnership between Bain & Company and Red Hat to survey hundreds of U.S. executives and IT leaders across industries to determine what they believe to be the future role of next-generation technology in their digital transformation. In particular, you’ll learn about what digital leaders prioritize in the face of market competition, how they’re building their digital strategy to support future growth, and how modern technologies such as containers can affect digital transformation.
The paper begins by discussing the market shifts that are pushing traditional enterprises toward digital and goes on to discuss the industry-wide quest for “digital maturity”—even though most companies aren’t there yet. According to the survey, few traditional enterprises have made much progress on their digital journeys, and even the most digitally mature traditional enterprises aren’t on the cutting edge.
Comparing companies at varying levels of digital maturity, the survey showed that companies’ digital investment varied dramatically according to several factors, one of which was modern application development and deployment platforms such as containers. Uniformly, digitally advanced traditional enterprises reported that their architectures are agile, adaptable, and scalable—and that optimizing and modernizing existing technology should be part of the overall digital journey. Therefore, a primary objective of Bain & Company, as well as Red Hat, was to determine whether containers can make a difference.
According to the companies’ research, containers may travel a similar path to adoption as analog technologies like virtualization. Bain & Company and Red Hat see container adopters prioritizing a growing set of workloads. Today, web apps are a top priority for some of the companies studied, but future emphasis might move to other workloads, even those traditionally considered difficult to containerize. In general, containers have evolved—and continue to evolve—to hold significant potential in the digital future.
