Technologies such as server virtualization are fueling the transition to the cloud, but most data centers are still hampered by the process of network provisioning. Without the ability to provision networks on demand, reconfiguring network components remains labor-and time-intensive, and often prone to error.
A recent white paper from Citrix outlines a joint solution with Cisco that helps accelerate application deployment onto networks with scale, multitenancy, and security. In the joint solution, Cisco’s Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) integrates Citrix NetScaler application delivery controller (ADC) appliances, the only ADC in which the full feature set is exposed to the ACI fabric.
The comprehensive level of integration provides a flexible way to link network services to applications and automates the process of aligning applications to infrastructure. It also reduces deployment complexity, increases agility, and speeds time to production.
While most data centers find it difficult to fully automate provisioning because of their mix of bare-metal and virtual machines, the ACI-NetScaler solution works in any environment. ACI works through a Citrix device package to automate the service chaining and service insertion of both physical and virtual NetScaler.
The paper explains how Cisco’s Application Policy Infrastructure Controller (APIC) serves as the central point of control for application policy management, making it easy to combine Citrix NetScaler’s Layer 4-7 application fabric with Cisco’s Layer 2-3 network fabric. Network administrators can use the APIC to define application profiles that intelligently chain NetScaler network services together, such as combining content switching, SSL, offloading, and load balancing.
The paper shows how the joint solution helps users:
- Optimize scalability and performance
- Secure application delivery
- Enable resiliency and fallover
To demonstrate how NetScaler appliances help enhance cloud application delivery, the companies developed a reference architecture for deploying enterprise applications on an ACI fabric with NetScaler. Engineers validated the architecture and documented the design, deployment steps, and test results in a design and implementation guide.
